Literary Analysis #3

The Battle Between Generations
In the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan there is eight characters, four mothers and four daughters. All of these character’s stories are about how things were different when they or their mother’s were younger. Each generation handled their problems different and had different ideas about certain things. One difference is that the mother’s couldn't just get a divorce when they no longer loved their husbands. Another difference is that the mother’s were raised to respect their mothers, but some decided to raise their daughters differently and allow them to have their own voice. This is one of the main reasons that the daughters didn't really take their mother’s life lessons and superstitions seriously.
The main difference of the generations is how they handled love. This is also due to the fact that they lived in different countries. Most of the mothers had arranged marriages and were raised to please their husbands. While the daughters married who they wanted and had a different mind set. They felt that they should be treated equal with their husbands. In addition the daughters were allowed to get a divorce if they were unhappy with their husbands. While the mother’s were taught to work things out or suffer through it.
As for raising children all eight of the characters felt the same way. Which is they didn't want to raise they’re children how they were raised. This way of thinking caused quite a conflict. Then again in reality everyone thinks that way. They use the way they were raised as an example of what to do and what not to do. The daughters felt that their mothers were silly and had strange ways of thinking, but sometimes those ways of thinking were smart and useful.
Another difference is the generations ideas of family. The mother’s were raised to always do good to make their family proud. Also that they had couldn't disgrace the family otherwise they would be shunned. This happened to An-Mei Hsu’s mother. She was no longer welcome to the family after she disgraced it which was quite sad. This made the mother’s raise their own daughters to know that they would love them no matter what and they proved that. They were always there when their daughters needed them. Although many of the daughters didn't see it this way and often disliked being around their mothers. They did have a similar idea of family which is that the daughters were to take care of their parents in their old age. Most of the characters did exactly that no matter how much they couldn't stand their mothers.
In conclusion, the different generations do have different ideas and ways of dealing with issues, but in the end they all used the generation before them as an example. They did have some similarities though. Such as raising their children and about the importance of family. In the long run these ways of thinking are what kept the families together.

Literature Analysis #2

The Road by Cormac McCarthy is about a man and his son's journey to the south during an apocalypse. Along this journey they encounter many troubles such as starvation, illness, and cannibalism. These things give the novel suspense which is what compelled me to keep reading the novel. Just when you think that death is upon them something happens like them finding more supplies or a good place for shelter. The reason that the father is taking his son on this journey is because he knows that in the North they wouldn't be able to survive the weather. Even though it seems as though the father won't survive anywhere. Throughout the story the father coughs blood and the author explains how he is weak. This is the biggest reveal in the end because you want the father to live, but you don't find out until the very end of the novel what becomes of the father and his son.
The main theme of the novel is you can never say for sure that you would do something until the time comes when you have to do it. I believe that it is this because throughout the novel the father contemplates about the idea of having to kill his son. He wonders if he would actually be able to do it even though he knows that it would be to save his son from the cannibals.
My connection to this book is the love that the father has for his son. I can relate to this because I have a really close relationship with my mom and my sister. We always say that it is us against the world and in the novel it really was for the father and son. The father would give his son the little food they had and sometimes take none for himself and that is how my mom is. So this is how I was able to connect to the book.

Into Antigone

I’m not sure that I would do what Antigone did in this situation. I mean I would love to give my brother what he deserves, but I wouldn’t even think of the idea of burying him myself. I would secretly have something in his honor. Like in the memory of him, but not physically bury him. I’m not sure if that would be considered against the law, but if it was I would do it anyway. Especially if he was my favorite brother I guess. My ceremony in his honor would be me with maybe some candles and I would say a prayer for him. I am not sure if that would be enough considering the gods say that you have to be buried in order to move on to the afterlife. I wouldn’t do anything that would put my life at risk though because I am sure that he wouldn’t want me to die for him. Also, I doubt they would bury me, so I wouldn’t be able to move on to the afterlife either. Basically in an effort to bury my brother I would be killed and spend eternity wondering the earth because I can’t go to the afterlife. This would all be pointless because after finding out that I buried my brother the king would most likely have him unburied. Which is why I would just stick to a little ceremony in his honor all by myself if my sister is even too scared to do that.

Jonathan Safran Foer Webinar Reaction Assignment

1) On October 28,2014 my class and I watched a persuasive video presented by Jonathan Safran Foer. The title of the video was Jonathan Safran Foer Webenar.

  • One specific moment that stood out to me was when Foer stated that "76 million Americans get food poisoning each year." That is a crazy amount of people. This is all because of the foods that we consume. Foer stated that the main source of food poisoning is animal agriculture. Animals are not the same as they were years ago. They are being subjected to more these days which make them primarily not safe to eat.
  • Another moment that stood out to me was when Foer said that when doing his research he went to factory farmers who make hot dogs and they said that they would never consume a hot dog themselves. They are the only people who know every ingredient that goes into making hot dogs.
  •  "99% of American Agriculture is now factory farming." This really stood out to me because Foer further explains that their isn't live stock running around farms like back in the day. Packaging that says free ranged chicken and non hormone beef is all lies. Foer really did his research and put these companies out on front street. I don't understand how this false advertisement is legal.

2) This presentation can relate to my life because I actually tried being a vegetarian. I didn't have any support though. Which made it harder. I considered becoming a vegetarian because I just all of a sudden stopped liking the taste of meat. It really disgusted me. My mom got mad at me though. She said that I was just being picky and that I was going to make it harder for her to cook because I'm Mexican and our food always has meat. This is true which is why I am not a vegetarian although after learning these facts from Foer I think I might consider it again.

Literary Analysis Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

1) This novel is initially told through the eyes of an adventurer named Robert Walton. On his journey through the northern ice he saves a man named Victor Frankenstein. Walton expresses his love for adventure to the stranger he encountered, so Frankenstein sees this as an opportunity to warn or give a lesson to Walton. After this the story is narrated by Victor Frankenstein as he tells Robert Walton of his adventures and discoveries.

2) The theme of this novel is everything comes with a price that must be paid. Victor Frankenstein did something that no man should be able to do. He did this out of pure curiosity. He eventually did pay the price for what he did. I think the author chose to write about this because it is a good lesson to learn. The unknown isn't known for a reason. Reasons that shouldn't be tested.

3) I chose this book because my favorite holiday is Halloween and Frankenstein's story is a huge part of that. This book has intrigued me since I was much younger than I am now. I have always wanted to read this book. What made me not want to put it down is because I know the outline of the story of Frankenstein, but like many people I didn't know what became of the monster in the end. This compelled me to read on and finish the book.

4) Of course this book isn't realistic. I mean to create man you need a soul and you can't make that out of scrapped body parts. I was unable to make any connections to this story because this book is fiction. Most of this book is unrealistic, but the message behind it was still a good lesson.

5) The authors tone was regret and shame. It was this because it was narrated by Victor Frankenstein who was confessing his choices and regrets to Robert Walton. "I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful energy, show signs of life and stir with an uneasy, half vital motion." "It was on a dreary night of November, that I beheld the accomplishments of my toils." "But I was a wretch, and none ever conceived of the misery that I then endured."

6) The whole story was told in a formal diction. Even when the author was using imagery to describe what the monster looked like which can be found in Chapter IV page 78. This helped strengthen my understanding of the author's purpose because it better expressed the disgust and amazement of the Victor Frankenstein.

Characterization:

1) Two examples of direct characterization are when the author describes Victor Frankenstein's father and his cousin Elizabeth Lavenza. Just by the things that these characters said I was able to tell what kind of personalities they had. Two examples of indirect characterization was when the author described Robert Walton and Victor Frankenstein these characters developed and progressed throughout the story.

2) The author's diction does not change when different characters speak. They all have the same proper grammar and speech.

3) The protagonist is a dynamic character and round of course. The protagonist is dynamic because he changes a lot throughout the story. He goes from being curious to afraid of the unknown. His experience completely changed his character and way of thinking.

4) After reading this novel I feel like I met a new person. I was able to feel the panic and worry that Victor Frankenstein felt. I almost felt as though he was telling me his story and discoveries. I enjoyed this very much.

Enduring Memory:
Something from this novel that I will remember is the complete message behind it. I have always thought of myself as a curious person. Although, after reading this novel I think I might change that. Curiosity really does kill the cat. I will not spoil the ending, but I will say that this novel does not have a happy ending. "Like one who, on a lonely road, doth walk in fear and dread, and, having once turn'd round, walks on, and turns no more his head; because he knows a frightful fiend doth close behind him tread." (Shelley 83)

Journal #5

Q: Why do so many young people want to be older and old people want to be younger?

A: So many young people want to be older because you have more freedom when you are older. First of all you can vote. You especially can get into clubs and drink. The best of all is that you can drive and go wherever you want without having to ask for permission. I know you have to have money to drive, but again when you are older you can have a job. Most places only hire eighteen and older. This is why so many young people want to be older. So many old people want to be young because you can do more things when you are young. When you are old you can't go on theme park rides or go out in the cold because of arthritis and pains and what not. You are at higher risks of having heart attacks and strokes. You also have to take many medications. This is why so many old people want to be young again. I personally like my age. I am just grateful that I have lived this long. I know fifteen years doesn't seem that long, but a lot of people are dying young now. Don't get me wrong I can't wait to be eighteen, but I also can't wait to be like eighty. So many people don't want to live until they are eighty because it's supposedly miserable, but people should be happy that they lived that long. When you're old you have stories to tell and life lessons to give. Which gives your life a purpose. People need to love their age no matter how old they are. Whether it be fifteen or eighty. You are fortunate to be alive.

BOR Essay

Me As the Youngest Child

As the youngest child the birth order research described me perfectly. It said that I was many things. The ones I related to the most were absentminded, impatient, vivacious, precocious, uncomplicated, and that I blame others for stuff. My own life experiences helped me relate to these words even more.
Two words that the research says I am is absentminded and impatient. I am constantly getting in trouble for being absentminded. I am fully aware that I show a lack of attention. One time I was in science class and my teacher was explaining what to do for a project and I wasn't paying attention. So, then I heard my teacher say to get to work and I was completely lost. I try to fight it, but I'm a daydreamer. I am also very impatient. I have mini heart attacks in the morning before school because I have to wait for my sister. She has to put on her makeup and she always puts her heels on right before we are about to leave, so it stresses me out. Which is why I am impatient. These are just two ways that the research describes me right. There are still many words that describe me from the birth order research.
Two other words from the research that are like me are vivacious and precocious. Me being vivacious actually explains a lot. Literally ever guy friend I've had ended up crushing on me. I'm normally not myself in front of guys I like or don't know, but I am in front of my guy friends. Which would explain why they like me because apparently vivacious is an attractive quality. The research also says that I am precocious. My mom said that I have always been precocious. Since I was about two years old I would use words like incredible, hilarious, and delicious rather than great, funny, or good. I know it is kind of hard to believe, but my mom always used words like that in front of me, so I picked up on it. There are still a couple more words that the research used to describe me that I believe are quite accurate.
The last two words that describe me from the research are uncomplicated and that I blame others. I am pretty straightforward and an open book, so I can see how that can be classified as uncomplicated. My family and friends all seem to know what I would want or what to get me. Even if they don't get the right thing I don't make a big deal about it because at least they tried, so I can see how that is an uncomplicated reaction. Another characteristic from the birth order research is that I blame others. I basically do this just to tick people off. It's hilarious. Especially when I do it to my sister. I can even come up with a way that makes it seem like their fault not mine. They even start to believe me. I sometimes say that I am kidding and take the blame, but not always. These six words from the research sum me up entirely. I couldn't believe that I am the way I am because I'm the youngest child.
In conclusion, the birth order research accurately describes me as the youngest child. The research was pretty much spot on. There was only like two things that I would disagree on, but the rest was completely right. The research even helped me better understand myself as I compared the words to me. It explained a lot of things for me. Such as why I am the way I am.

Birth Order Traits

BOR Research and Evidence T-Chart
What The Research SaysEvidence Showing Accuracy or Inaccuracy
Rebellious                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Although it may not be considered a good personality trait I am very rebellious. I usually tend to do the opposite of what I am told. Whenever I am told not to do something it makes me want to do it even more. I can't help it. I guess it's because my older sister does whatever she is told and I try to be my own person rather than be like her.
Charming                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     I have been told that I am very charming. Whenever I would meet my mom's friends or family that I hadn't seen in a long time they would tell my mom that I was charming. I asked how and my mom said it's that way I say things, so I don't know I guess my tone of voice is charming.
Precocious                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   I am definitely precocious. I always thought it was the way that I grew up because I had to grow up pretty fast. Many of my past teachers have told my mom at conferences that I am mature for my age. I kind of noticed because I used to think that certain kids my age were immature, but it was that I was too mature.
People Person                                                                                                                                                                                     I do not think that I am a people person. I actually strongly despise being around people. I guess it's that I am easily annoyed, so I can't stand being around people because I find them annoying. Again it is not one of my best personality traits, but it's true.
Uncomplicated                                                                                                                                                                                                          I am completely uncomplicated. I guess it's because I tend to just go with the flow. I hate controversy so I just people please. I have been told that I shouldn't just people please, but honestly it is way better than controversy. Which makes me uncomplicated.
Manipulative                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               As ashamed as I am to admit this I am manipulative. I thought that I inherited that trait from my dad, but I guess it is associated with being the youngest? I can basically get people to do stuff for me whether they want to or not. It doesn't just work on my family it also works on my friends. I don't know how I do it. It just comes naturally to me.

Reflections On Week 1

No there are not any factors that will affect my participation in this class. I recently had to get internet for this class, but it was fine with me. My mom was a little upset, but I like having the internet. We always had a computer just no internet, so I was excited that she had no choice than to get it for me because I need it for this class. I do have a smart phone so if I need it I have one. I don't really understand why we would need it for class, but I guess I'll find out soon enough. So all in all I don't have anything that will affect my participation in this class.

The best ever learning experience I had was when I was in choir and we went to Disney Land! I know it doesn't sound very educational, but it was. We got to go backstage and they taught us how Disney movies and cartoons were made. We also learned about the recording process of music. We got to use everyday objects as instruments and record the sound and then they matched our music up with a scene from a Disney movie. It was really cool! I was in seventh grade and it was in Junior High so my sister was in eighth grade, so I got to experience it with her. I was fascinated with everything because that is along the lines of what I want to do when I grow up and what I want to go to college for. It was an amazing learning experience and it made me look forward to my future because I got to see how fun it is going to be.

In this class I am most excited about the books we get to read. It sounds kind of nerdy, but it's true. I really liked the books we got to read in honors English 1, so I hope the ones in this class are just as interesting. The books we read will make a practical difference in my life because I get to say that I read a book that was a classic. For example I now get to say that I read the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. So that is what I am most excited about. A thing that I am concerned about is presentations. I am typically shy, so I get really nervous just talking to people let alone in front of them. I try to stay calm, but the longer I am in front of the class I start to shake really bad. My voice doesn't just shake my whole body does. I don't really know why. I think I start to get scared maybe because I shake when I'm scared. I was always told that I would get used to talking in front of the class the more I did it, but that's a lie. I haven't gotten used to it. So this is the only thing that I am most concerned about.

My Six Words

I chose these six words because they basically sum up my life. I love to sleep because first of all who doesn't? My weekends are spent sleeping in until like one o'clock in the afternoon. I don't really care if I sleep my life away because at least I'm happy with the way I'm living. I don't care for the saying "We will sleep when we are dead" or something like that? Anyway it's like cool I get to sleep more than I do now which is absolutely fine with me! So yeah anyone who knows me will say that those six words fit me perfectly.
